I am a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in both medications and psychotherapy. I completed my medical training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM), and also completed my psychiatric residency at UCSOM, serving as Chief Resident in Psychiatry from 2018-19. I completed additional training in multiple modalities of psychotherapy during residency through UCSOM’s Psychotherapy Scholars program. I treat most kinds of mental illness, but have particular expertise in the areas of mood disorders, anxiety, OCD, personality disorders, and working with health care professionals (including students in health care training programs). I am not board-certified in child and adolescent psychiatry, but may be willing to work with patients ages 15 and up in select circumstances.
In my experience, patients are unlikely to improve simply by taking medication, without also making lifestyle changes, behavioral modifications and/or engaging in psychotherapy. I believe that medication can be an important and effective part of a mental health treatment plan, but medications are not appropriate for everyone; some mental health conditions can be effectively treated without medication use. In general, I aim to find the lowest effective dose of medication for you, and to simplify the medication plan whenever possible. My goal is to treat the patient, not just the symptoms.
I largely practice psychodynamic psychotherapy. In this type of therapy, we look at how the unconscious plays a role in your current issues. Unresolved conflicts related to past experiences can impact how you think, feel, and behave. By bringing these conflicts to awareness, you gain insight into why you are the way you are. This can lead to not only symptom improvement, but lasting changes in how you think and feel. This type of therapy may or may not be appropriate for you, based on your unique circumstances, and we can discuss whether other types of therapy might be more helpful. I also bring in elements of other types of therapy that I think may be useful to you. I have limited availability to see patients for weekly/bi-weekly therapy sessions at this time, so I may recommend seeking therapy elsewhere if I cannot accommodate your needs.
